The Dawes Arboretum, a non-profit, public garden committed to enriching lives through the conservation of trees and nature, is seeking an inspiring Director of Education to provide overall leadership, management direction, program development and strategic planning for the Arboretum’s educational programs. The ideal candidate will be an experienced visionary leader and creative thinker who embraces and exemplifies the Arboretum’s mission, vision and values. This is a full-time (40 hours per week) year round exempt level position that reports to the Executive Director and serves as a member of the leadership/management team.
 
Job Responsibilities
·       Lead staff in the design, development and implementation of education programs and services including on/off-site programs; pre-school and early childhood programs; middle and high school age programs; adult and senior programs; workshops; outreach programs; camps; and recreational programs and informal education experiences.
·       Oversee the planning and development of educational outreach activities including but not limited to scout programs, homeschool programs and strategic community partnerships. Oversee an annual calendar of special exhibitions and programs that attracts visitors and members.
·       Identify and prioritize department needs in alignment with the Arboretum’s strategic plan. Develop a comprehensive education strategic plan and ensure its integration. Strategically position education programs and services to generate earned revenue.
·       Implement and maintain a quantitative and qualitative program evaluation process that enables The Dawes Arboretum to measure and demonstrate program impact.
·       Lead or lend programming support and direction to Arboretum special events such as Maple Syrup Days, Arbor Day, Ohio Sustainable Landscape Symposium and Fall Festival.
·       Perform routine administrative tasks including but not limited to generating annual educational program calendar, registration forms, creating program agreements and contracts, completing purchase orders, invoices and content for promotional pieces.
          
Qualifications
·       Bachelor's degree in education, natural resources or other related major with experience in environmental education, science, environmental studies or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
·       Minimum of 5 years’ demonstrated experience in education required, with additional experience in environmental or science education, outdoor learning, interpretation or school administration preferred or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
·       Minimum of 3-5 years’ demonstrated experience in staff management, program planning and program development or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required sills, knowledge and abilities.
·       Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategic plans for sustainable success, and the ability to develop and implement tactical plans to advance overall strategy.
·       Proficiency and comfort using technology to maximize programming, outreach, and communications. Strong experience with data-driven analysis to guide strategy and decision making.
·       Impeccable communication skills (written, verbal and interpersonal) for effective interactions with the public and community groups. Demonstrated experience with public speaking and providing presentations.
·       Comfortable interacting with the general public and providing extemporaneous educational experiences.
·       Superior organization and time management skills with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
·       Comfortable in a fast-paced environment that requires quick turn around and flexibility.
·       Ability to work outdoors, weekends and evenings when needed.
